Things You Can Do to Keep Your Family Safe on the Holiday Roads

Holiday travel is infamous for good reason: It’s a huge pain. Too much traffic, unsafe road conditions, and drunk drivers all spell disaster for some holiday travelers. There are things you can do, however, to keep your family safe while you travel during the holidays. Kinetech Motor Werkes suggests the following to keep your holidays merry and bright rather than frustrating and dangerous.

Think About You First

Sounds selfish, doesn’t it? It isn’t. If you’re the driver this holiday season there are some things you should do to protect yourself. First, make sure you get plenty of sleep before the drive; don’t rely on caffeine to keep you awake behind the wheel. Don’t rely on sugar, either. Yes, you do feel an energy boost when you first ingest coffee or soda, but once that boost wears off, you’ll be more tired than you were before. Water hydrates you and proper hydration ensures your energy doesn’t wane.

Make sure you snack on healthy foods during your drive, too. Keep your sugar levels balanced with three meals and snacks in between while on the road. Make the snacks high in protein and low in fat. Stop at restaurants for meals – don’t go through the drive-thru. Junk food is filled with sugar and fat and these two things combine to make for one sleepy driver. Stop to rest frequently and fill those stops with healthy choices, including a choice to abstain from alcohol or illegal substances.

Think About Your Family Next

Next, know that the water, healthy food and snacks, and frequent stops will also help your family stay happy during the holiday road trek. Tired and cranky children begin the “Are we there yet?” reshuffle sooner rather than later, and a tired and cranky spouse makes for a long drive. Everyone will be happier if they stay hydrated and filled with good food, plus, stopping frequently to get out of the car allows everyone to walk around and get the blood circulating again.

Distractions are good to keep your family happy but not you, so you turn off your cell phone and tell the kids to wear headphones so their games or music doesn’t bother you. Bear in mind many automobile accidents are caused by distracted driving, so make sure your family is happy and entertained but not at your expense. Keep emergency supplies in the vehicle, as well, just in case. Good things to pack include non-perishable food, water, blankets, and a flashlight.
